Message from the President
Dear University Community,
I want you all to know that we are against all forms of discrimination on our campus and in our institution. In response to the current worldwide debate on racist attitudes, I would like to say expressly what is self-evident at our university: we have no tolerance whatsoever for discrimination! In light of what has happened in recent months, I would also like to add: black lives matter – in Passau, at our University, and all over the world!
As human beings, we are diverse, and that is a good thing. For the University of Passau, diversity is a way of becoming even more vibrant, cosmopolitan and equitable. The diversity of our students, lecturers and staff is both a responsibility and a strength of the University – and the basis for every form of good science.
There is one respect, however, in which we must all be allowed to be equal: and that is when it comes to equal rights, equal opportunities for education and participation, and to be treated fairly in our daily dealings with one another. To me and all members of the University, this is an unalterable fact; it has been our position since the very founding of this institution and will remain so. This is why, since 2015, the University has been engaged in the nationwide HRK initiative 'Universities Open to the World', this is why we are proud of our voluntary commitment to the HRK code of conduct for German higher education projects abroad and of our joint efforts to remain vigilant against discrimination in any form.
Diversity and fair play are integral to our campus culture. Keeping them alive also means constantly asking ourselves: Are we doing enough to make our stance unmistakably clear? Are we vigilant enough? Is there anything we could do better? Are there people who need our help?
'It is not enough to be non-racist; we must be anti-racists': Just like our Federal President did recently, I encourage you to continue standing up for yourself and others – wherever you encounter ostracism, hatred and discrimination. And I invite you to keep our discourse on racism and discrimination alive and to continue to exchange ideas with us, the University Executive, your lecturers and your fellow students.
Vice President Christina Hansen, who is working closely on the topic of diversity within the University Executive, is already planning the next formats for this debate. I hope to see you there!
Good wishes to you all. We stand together.
Professor Ulrich Bartosch
President
