Die moderne Gesellschaft ist stark vom reibungslosen Funktionieren ihrer Informationsinfrastruktur abhängig. Hochgradig vernetzte Systeme sind heute wichtiger Bestandteil in fast allen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen, z.B. in der ökonomischen Wertschöpfung, als Grundvoraussetzung für das Funktionieren elementarer Infrastrukturen oder im Alltag vieler Menschen auf interpersoneller Ebene durch ihre Beteiligung an sozialen Netzwerken. Früher wirkten die Systeme relativ isoliert, so dass die Risiken und Gefahren besser geortet und kontrolliert werden konnten. Heute aber sind die Systeme vielfältig miteinander gekoppelt, flexibel und zu komplexen, hochgradig vernetzten, aber dadurch auch oft fragilen Gebilden geworden. Der Forschungsverbund FORSEC beschäftigt sich interdisziplinär mit der Sicherheit, der Verlässlichkeit und dem Schutz von und vor hochgradig vernetzten IT-Systemen. Die Forschungen sind an diesem globalen Leitthema ausgerichtet und werden in Form von individuellen Teilprojekten realisiert.
